My heart about exploded when these babies turned up at an estate sale. Based on the warm patina worn into their handles, they were obviously well loved. I can only imagine the art they helped their owner create 150-200 years ago.
The initial 'FM" is hand carved onto every handle. Who could it be? My favorite theory is that they belonged to prominent Black Forest carver Fuchs Melchior, who coincidentally specialized in carving dogs.
The tradition continues in my wood shop, where they help me create the portraits you see in my portfolio. Nothing digital going on in these corners.
